Michelle came to America in the fall of 1997. She had hydrocephalus. She nursed until she was handed over
to Dr. Carroll. She was 11 months old when she came. She could not walk, hold her head up, or feed herself. She was complete care, but her personality would draw everyone to her. After several
weeks, Dr. Olivero placed a shunt in her brain to help drain the fluid off. Kate and Sumner Watson came from New York to meet her in hopes of adopting her shortly after her surgery. We celebrated her first
birthday that weekend. The Watsons were nice people but I realized that I had fallen in love with Michelle and the parting would be difficult. A month after her surgery, my sister Sue and I drove her to New
York to her new family. The trip was long, however, I knew this was God's plan for her life. We shed many tears over leaving Michelle in New York, yet the day after I came home I knew this had changed me for
life and that I wanted another Haitian child. Even though the pain was great, the reward was far greater. |
