Daniel Des Cardes arrived in the U.S. on May 24, 2001 and stayed with Dennis and Karen Leman.  He had a mitral valve replacement in August 2001 with a quick and easy recovery.  Daniel spoke French, English, and Creole and often translated for other Haitians that were here at the time.  Daniel returned to Haiti on September 7, 2001 with a new bike that would be a great help to him in getting to and from school.  Daniel's plans were to finish high school.
